Business Operations - ASD

The ASD mission is to design, develop, operate and support Business Automation applications that improve the operational processes of CECOM SEC, the Army Materiel Command (AMC) and the Army's Office of the Judge Advocate General (OTJAG). These applications improve process throughput and quality, while simultaneously lowering process costs. Major business automation applications designed, developed and supported by ASD and STI include the Financial Disclosure Management system (FDM), Performance Evaluation Tool (PET), Automated Individual Development Plan System (AIDP), Awards Management System (AWS), Performance Assessment System (PASS), Functional Support Agreement Tracking System (FSAT), Training Tracking and Management System (TTMS), Contract Requirements System (CRS) and Roll Call (RC).

These applications have anywhere from 25 to 10,000 users and are built using a variety
of J2EE and Cold Fusion technologies (JSP, EJB, JAAS, Struts, JMS, CFML, CFC, etc.). Typical applications involve a presentation Tier (JSP), a business logic tier (EJB), and a persistence tier (SQL Server 2000, Oracle, etc.). ASD supports over 40 existing applications and currently has approximately 10, in various stages of active development.

STI staff is helping to lead ASD through a transformation from building custom-crafted, client-server, stand-alone, "personal productivity" applications, using procedural software technologies and little to no software process to build rapidly customizable, web-based, collaborative, "business process automation" applications, using Industry Standard Architectures, Object-Oriented software technologies, and agile, repeatable software processes. To accomplish this transformation, STI staff provides the following services: business planning, quality management, software process re-engineering, change management, requirements elicitation and management, business process re-engineering, quality assurance management, automated test design and development, configuration management and IT Program/Project management and associated Program Management support. In support of ASD, STI uses, and in some cases administers, a variety of software process management tools, including VSS for configuration management, Mercury Test Director for Defect Management and Mercury QuickTest and LoadTest for test automation.
